Get to know KHA

Kidney & Hypertension Associates is a provider group that specializes in the treatment of patients with kidney diseases, hypertension, diabetes, stone disease, and multi-organ disorders that affect kidney function.

In 1998, Dr. David Powers started a part-time nephrology practice on the Northshore in conjunction with LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, where he was employed as a professor. Dr. Powers initially operated the practice with a single medical assistant, the late “Miss Margaret”. They saw their original patients in one of two locations: a converted warehouse in Hammond that was subdivided into makeshift exam rooms, and a sublet office space in Covington.

Dr. Powers left LSU in 2000 in order to develop Kidney & Hypertension Associates into a full-time private nephrology practice. Since that time, KHA has expanded to satellite offices throughout the Northshore area and provides consulting services to various hospitals and medical centers that serve our communities.

KHA practitioners also hold medical director positions for six Fresenius dialysis units, which are located at clinics in Hammond, Covington, Slidell, Amite, Franklinton and Lacombe. Additionally, Kidney & Hypertension Associates manages acute inpatient dialysis for three major medical facilities and two long-term care hospitals across the region, and is one of the only physician groups in Southeast Louisiana that offers resources for qualifying patients to receive peritoneal (at-home) dialysis.

We want to maintain our reputation as the Northshore's premier nephrology practice by offering the same compassionate, patient-centered care we have provided since Day One, as we also continually expand our reach, our knowledge, and our services to help more people than we did the day before.

At Kidney & Hypertension Associates, we tailor our care strategies to each patient's individual needs.
