Meet Our Team

As managing partner of Kidney & Hypertension Associates, Dr. David Powers leads a team of 4 physicians, 2 nurse practitioners and a support staff of 15 people.  Dr. Powers founded Kidney & Hypertension Associates in 2000 and brings over 30 years of experience as a nephrologist.  Dr. Powers did his training at the University of California, Irvine where he received his MD degree and completed residency and nephrology fellowship training. He later was a Professor at UC Irvine and the Assistant Director of Medicine at the University Medical Center before coming to LSU Health Sciences in New Orleans in 1994. Dr. Powers is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology and is accepting new and existing patients with all forms of kidney diseases.

Dr. Bennett is a native of Alexandria, Louisiana. He received his undergraduate training at Southeastern University and did his training at LSU Medical School. He did his Fellowship in Nephrology at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology and is accepting new and existing patients with all forms of kidney diseases.

Dr. Mares did his Internal Medicine training at the University of Louisville and his Nephrology fellowship at Dartmouth. He came to KHA from South Carolina where he was in private practice. He took a hiatus from his Nephrology practice to take a Hypertension fellowship with one of the international leaders in hypertension, Dr. George Bakris, at the University of Chicago. Dr. Mares is Board certified in Nephrology, Hypertension and Internal Medicine.

Dr. Granera is from Louisiana and she and her family reside in Covington. Dr. Granera received her Bachelor of Science degree from LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she graduated with Summa Cum Laude distinction. She did her Internal Medicine residency at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.  Dr. Granera has over 25 years experience as a Hospitalist in Asheville, North Carolina, Slidell, Louisiana and most recently in Hammond, Louisiana. Dr. Granera is board certified in Internal Medicine.

Kayla received her Master of Science in Nursing at the University of South Alabama in 2018. Prior to that, Kayla worked for 11 years as a Registered Nurse, including 5 years in the ICU, and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA in 2008.

Mark is a family nurse practitioner who came to KHA after a long and distinguished nursing career at Ochsner Medical Center in Covington and Southern Surgical in Slidell. Mark has been a registered nurse since 2008 and has experience in delivering excellent nursing care to patients as an Operating Room Manager and Nurse. Mark received his Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2022.  The KHA family is extremely honored to have a nurse practitioner with Mark’s experience and compassionate personality with our practice.
